Plath (1932-1963) was educated at Smith College (A.B., 1955) and Newnham College, Cambridge University (A.B., 1957). She married Ted Hughes in 1956 and taught English at Smith College, 1957-1958. Plath and Hughes returned to England in Dec. 1959 and separated in 1962. In her lifetime she published two books: The Colossus and other poems (1960) and The bell jar (1963).
